First Presbyterian Church
Rooted and Established in Christ
Since
erecting the first church building in the new city of Lake Jackson in 1946,
First Presbyterian has grown in leaps and bounds much like the community it
serves. Now occupying a sprawling site with an attractive sanctuary, the church
serves as a hub for Presbyterians in the Brazosport
area. Close to 600 members provide a host of worship experiences, small group
learning opportunities, programs, Youth groups, mission activities, and
fellowship times.
First
Presbyterian faces the challenges of a new millennium with faith in Jesus
Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever and invites you to join us on
the journey.

Pastor
Senior
Pastor, Dr. Alan P. Trafford, came to Lake Jackson in May 1998 after
ministering in England and Pennsylvania. A native of Lancashire, England,
Alan took his first degree at Birmingham University then completed his postgraduate
ministerial training at Westminister College,
Cambridge. He has served on various national committees and been active in
renewal circles both in the U.K. and in the U.S. where he and his family
moved in 1993. Alan gave the Brigham Memorial Lectures at Eastminister
Presbyterian in Grand Rapids, MI in 1993 and has had a number of articles
published in various journals. He is married to Lesley, a floral designer;
they have been blessed with two sons, Daniel and Nathan.
The First Presbyterian Church of
Lake Jackson was organized by the Presbytery of Brazos of the Presbyterian
Church, U.S., on March 10, 1946. Thirty-six charter members became a new
congregation. Three of the original members are still present; these include
Mr. Bob Adams, Mrs. E.E. (Wilma) La Gasse and Mrs.
Ervin (Lucille) Shibley.
The new congregation built and
occupied new facilities in 1946. The new facility which was designed for
worship and study was the first building constructed by a worshiping
congregation in Lake Jackson. The present sanctuary was completed in 1963. The
area which includes the Fellowship Hall and the administrative offices was
dedicated in 1986.
Ground was broken for additional
classrooms in August of 1995. The sanctuary was renovated and additional
parking was added.
The Rev. Albert E. Ruhmann served the church as organizing pastor. He has been
succeeded by Dr. J.G. McMurtry, the Rev. Ernest L. Helsley, the Rev. Guice Stewart,
the Rev. Charles J. Stephenson, the Rev. John E. Toppins,
Dr. Bernard V. Munger, the Rev. Bailey Phelps, Dr.
Robert E. Johnson, the Rev. Lonnie P. Duvall, the Rev. Bruce H. Williams, Dr.
G. Thomas Huser, and Rev. Alan Trafford. The Rev.
Mike D. O'Neil became the church's first associate pastor in 1994.
