Disciple Life

September 12, 2010

Dear Friends,

There are two extremes to be avoided when it comes to talk of personal wealth. On the one hand, there are those who almost make an idol out of money. They seem to spend every waking moment thinking about how to increase what they have. In an earlier age, you can imagine them up a dark corner, counting their coins! On the other hand, there are those for whom the very thought of money seems to be an abomination. These are the people who are too spiritual to soil their hands with mere coins. They are the ones who tend to misquote I Timothy 6:10 (look it up)! In their eyes, any talk of wealth is sordid.

Surely, the truth lies between these two extremes. When we allow anything to attain a greater importance than our relationship with God, then we put ourselves in danger. When following the stock market gets in the way of prayer, something is wrong. But it’s equally wrong to think ourselves above such things. Isn’t God the Lord of our working lives just as much as He is Lord of our spiritual journey? The truth is: God is interested in every aspect of our lives; there is not a single corner that He does not claim as His own, and seek to bless.

Yours aye,
In Him,
Alan Trafford
